Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! (That sounds kind of Scriptural, doesn't it?!)If you hung around Dakota Bible College in the 1970s and think I look familiar, you're right! (However, my last name was different then.) While I was taking sign language class there, I kept having the feeling that someday I'd need what I was learning. That proved true when my son was born in 1987. He has been moderately hearing impaired since birth (with no apparent cause) and started wearing hearing aids at age 2. He had been very frustrated trying to communicate, and once we started signing with him, his communication level took off. However, after about a year, we had to quit signing because he was refusing to speak. With his hearing level, there was no reason for him to be non-verbal, so my signing skills went back on the shelf. However, it did help me to realize more of the daily problems encountered by persons who are deaf or hearing impaired. (Many times since then I've contemplated how much quieter it would be around our house if we hadn't made him start speaking!)
Fast forward to 1998 when my husband, son, daughter, and I moved to the Council Bluffs area. I had visited Deaf Missions while attending Dakota Bible College and currently attend church with some of the Deaf Missions staff. God dropped this job in my lap in May of 2000, and here I am. In addition to my Bachelor's degree in Christian Education, I have an Associate's degree in Secretarial Science and years of office experience.
