A Very Large Stone

Matthew 27:60 tells us that a very large stone covered the entrance to Jesus’ tomb. The next few verses also tell us that some Jewish leaders were afraid that someone might try to steal Jesus’ body. So Pilate sent Roman soldiers to guard the tomb.
Early in the morning of the next day, there was a “huge earthquake” (28:2). An angel came from the sky and rolled the stone away from the entrance. The soldiers who were guarding the tomb “shook with fear and then became like dead men” (28:4).
But Jesus had already risen from the dead. So why did the angel roll away the stone? The stone needed to be moved so everyone could see that Jesus was not there! Jesus had conquered death!
As you celebrate Jesus’ resurrection today, think about how excited Jesus’ followers were to hear the angel say, “Jesus is not here. He has risen from death” (Luke 24:6a).
