Yesterday we talked about the Temple in Jerusalem. The Temple was the most important place of worship for the Jews. But many towns had synagogues as well. Synagogues were places where the Jews gathered to worship, pray and fellowship.
Jesus talked about synagogues in our Bible verses for today. Jesus taught His disciples about prayer. In verse 5a Jesus said, “When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites. They love to stand in the synagogues and on the street corners and pray loudly. They want people to see them.” Jesus was talking about people who pray fancy prayers so they can impress other people.
Then Jesus told His disciples how they should pray. “But when you pray, you should go into your room and close the door. Then pray to your Father” (verse 6a). Jesus wants us to be humble and sincere when we pray to God, not proud and boastful.
Be humble and respectful when you pray to God today.
