We have already said that the best-known name for God’s Son is Jesus. The next most commonly-used name for Him is Christ.
Christ is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word Messiah. This name means anointed. In the Old Testament the priests and kings were anointed with oil. This anointing showed that a person was chosen to serve God in a special way.
In our Bible Reading, Jesus asked His disciples who people said He was. Peter answered (verse 16), “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” In the next verse, Jesus accepted Peter’s answer and said, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah.”
When Peter called Jesus the Christ, he was saying that Jesus was the promised Messiah that the Old Testament prophets talked about. This name also meant that Jesus was the One God chose to be Lord and Savior of the world.
When we talk about Jesus and call Him Christ, we are telling other people that we believe Jesus is our Lord and Savior. Share with someone about Jesus today!
