For the past nine days we have talked about the Ten Commandments that God gave to the Israelites. All of these laws are important. Obeying these commandments will help us have a good relationship with God and with other people. But maybe you are wondering which commandment is the most important.
One day a Jewish expert on God’s laws asked Jesus which commandment was the most important. Matthew 22:37-40 gives us Jesus’ answer. “Jesus answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’ All of the law and the writings of the prophets take their meaning from these two commands.” In these verses, Jesus gave us a summary of the Ten Commandments — love God and love other people.
God gave the Ten Commandments to the Israelites to help them. God wanted them to be happy and satisfied. But when the Israelites did not obey these laws, they were not happy. God knows that if we obey His commandments, we will be happy. Remember that God always knows what is best for His children!
