Commandments (5)

The fifth commandment is found in Exodus 20:12. This commandment begins a section where God gives us laws about our relationships with other people. This commandment is about parents and children. “You must honor and respect your father and your mother. Do this so that you will have a full life in the land the Lord your God gives you.” When Paul wrote to the church in the city of Ephesus, he said this is the first commandment that has a promise with it. If you respect your mother and father, God promises to bless your life.

We can show respect for our parents in many different ways. If you are a child, your respect may be obeying your parents. If you are older, your respect may be keeping in touch with your parents and thanking them for raising you. Or if your parents are elderly, your respect may be taking care of them — like they took care of you when you were young.

We can see every day on the news that some fathers and mothers neglect and abuse their children. That is very sad. But most parents love their children and take good care of them.

Take time today to thank God for your father and your mother. Even if you don’t have a close relationship with your parents, you can still find ways to show them your love and respect.
