When my brother was young, he liked to play with fire. Most of the time, his fires were small. But I remember two times when he started grass fires. My parents, grandfather and I used wet rugs to beat out the flames. These fires were not big like the forest fires you see on TV. But they were still dangerous fires. We ruined a lot of rugs, brooms and shoes trying to put out my brother’s fires.
Our Bible Reading today tells us that the tongue is like fire. Fires can hurt people. And when we gossip or say/sign careless words, we can hurt other people, too. Probably you can remember when someone said something bad about you. The words did not hurt your physical body, but they hurt your feelings.
Gossiping or hurting people with our words/signs is dangerous – like playing with fire. Remember to be like Jesus in everything you say/sign.
