Giving Thanks (3)

In 1777, the first American day of Thanksgiving was celebrated. Then in 1789, President George Washington established a national Thanksgiving Day on February 19th. Washington said, “It is our duty…to acknowledge our many thanks to Almighty God.”
In 1863, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln set up the last Thursday of November to be a day of thanks to God. Lincoln said the day was to be a “day of thanksgiving and praise to our Father who lives in the heavens.”
America has a long history of giving thanks to God. As Christians, we should be thankful every day of the year. Why? Because God sent Jesus to accept the punishment for our sins. And because we have the promise of eternal life through Jesus.
I hope you will be like David in our Bible Reading today. He said, “I bless the Lord all the time. His praise is always on my lips” (verse 1).
