Good Trees

The Israelites entered the land that God had promised to give them. Leviticus 19:23-25 says that God told the Israelites to plant many fruit trees in this land. For three years, they were not supposed to pick the fruit. The trees would grow and mature during this time. In the fourth year, the people gave the fruit as an offering to God. The fifth year, the people picked the fruit and ate it.
In our Bible Reading today, Jesus talked about good trees and bad trees. He said in verse 33b, “A tree is known by the kind of fruit it gives.” A good tree gives good fruit. A bad tree gives bad fruit. In the same way, good people will do and say/sign good things. Why? Because they love Jesus. Bad people will do and say/sign bad things because their hearts are evil.
In Psalm chapter 1, the writer compares a tree planted by a river to a person who follows God. A tree near a river will have deep roots that will help the tree grow. In the same way, a person who follows God will be thinking about God’s Word, the Bible, all the time. Then that person will do and say/sign good things for God.
