Herod the Great

Today and tomorrow we will look at two Bible stories. In each of these stories, there is a ruler named Herod.
Herod the Great was the ruler of Judea from 40 B.C. to 4 B.C. While he was ruling, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. When the wise men visited Herod, they told him about the birth of the king of the Jews (Jesus).
Herod was scared and upset. He did not want another king to take his place. So Herod came up with a plan. “Herod gave an order to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and in the area around Bethlehem…two years old and younger” (verse 16). I can’t even imagine how terrible it must have been for those parents who had their sons killed!
Herod was a powerful king. But God was even more powerful. God made sure that Jesus was safe. Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Egypt. They stayed there until Herod died.
God took care of Jesus. He will take care of you, too. You can trust God to know what is best for you.
