The word “if” is a small word, but it is a very important word. When the devil tempted Jesus, he used the word “if” each time he tempted Jesus.
The devil said, “If you are the Son of God, tell this rock to become bread” (verse 3b). “I will give it all to you, if you will only worship me” (verse 7). And in verse 9b, “If you are the Son of God, jump off!”
Sometimes the devil tempts us and uses “if,” too. “If you don’t go to church, you can sleep later on Sunday morning.” “If you cheat on your income tax, you won’t have to pay so much money.” “If you take office supplies home from work, you won’t need to buy them.”
When the devil tempts us in this way, we need to do what Jesus did. Jesus always replied to the devil with Bible verses. These verses helped Jesus resist the devil. You can resist the devil, too.
Read the Bible and know what God wants you to do. Then you can say “No!” to the devil when he tempts you to do wrong.
