Jesus, the Way

God’s Son, Jesus, was called many names in the Bible. Sometimes these names describe a part of His character. Some names tell us about Jesus’ work.
The first and best-known name is Jesus. Our Bible Reading today tells us that an angel spoke to Joseph. The angel said, “She [Mary] will give birth to a son. You will name the son Jesus” (verse 21a).
The angel Gabriel used this name when he told Mary that she would have a son (Luke 1:31). The name Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew word Joshua. Joshua means “Jehovah (God) is salvation.”
The angel explained to Joseph that the baby’s name would be Jesus because “he will save his people from their sins” (verse 21b). Whenever we use Jesus’ name, we are saying that He has the power to forgive our sins. We are saved in the name of Jesus.
Take time today to thank God for salvation through His Son, Jesus.
