Respect Older People

For many years, children were taught to respect older men and women. But today it seems that many children are not taught to honor older people. That is sad! Older people are very important, and we can learn a lot from them.

In many cultures, the older men make the decisions and rule the people. That was how it was with Israel. God told Moses to gather Aaron, his sons and the seventy elders of Israel at Mount Sinai. These men were probably the oldest and wisest Israelites. All the people respected them.

Exodus 24:9-10 tells us what these men experienced. “Then Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and the 70 elders of Israel went up the mountain. On the mountain, these men saw the God of Israel. Hewas standing on something that looked like blue sapphires, as clear as the sky!” These men were given a special honor. The people of Israel respected them.

I encourage you to teach your children and your grandchildren to show respect for the older generation. Teach them to be kind to elderly people. And give these older people opportunities to share their knowledge and experience with young people. God will be pleased with this!
