Spirit of Prophecy

We have seen that in Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit came to people and gave them wisdom, power, or special abilities to serve God. The Spirit also inspired people to speak or write God’s messages to His people.
The Spirit caused Balaam to speak prophecies over Israel (Numbers 24:2). Zechariah 7:12 says that God used His Spirit to give His message through the prophets. Micah wrote that God’s Spirit caused him to prophesy (Micah 3:8). In Matthew 22:43, Jesus says that the Spirit inspired David to write prophecies about the Messiah. And in our Bible Reading for today, Peter wrote that no prophecy comes from men, but from God through the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).
In the New Testament we see the Spirit working the same way, giving prophecies (Acts 11:28 and 21:11) and speaking through the apostles and other followers of Christ (Acts 2:1-42; 4:8,31; 7:55; 8:29). Even today, the Spirit gives us words when we must be witnesses for Jesus (John 14:26, 15:26, 16:13-15).
