Jesus was a humble person. He was always thinking about other people. Jesus looked for opportunities to serve and help people.
At the time Jesus lived on earth, many people wore sandals. They walked on dusty roads, so their feet became very dirty. It was their custom to wash people’s feet when they came into your home. Usually a slave or servant had the job of washing people’s feet.
Our Bible verses today tell us that Jesus and His followers were at an evening meal. Maybe no one had offered to wash the followers’ feet. “So while they were eating, Jesus stood up and took off his robe…Then he poured water into a bowl and began to wash the followers’ feet” (verses 4-5a).
Jesus was humble. He was willing to wash people’s dirty, smelly feet! This is a good example of how we should serve other people. Be like Jesus today. Look for ways to be humble and serve God.
